UAE leads FTTH deployments in the Gulf

Deployment of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) is accelerating in the Middle East but there is still a vast amount to do for a significant proportion of the population to be served by fiber connectivity. Although UAE-based Etisalat, one of the first operators to begin FTTH deployment in the region, has announced that it is nearing completion of its Abu Dhabi FTTH network - which will cover the entire city - penetration across the region will remain low. Although powering down PCs has regularly been mentioned by the green lobby over the last few months, analyst firm Gartner has now come up with some substantive figures about how much energy enterprises can save. Gartner reckons that around 31% of worldwide ICT energy usage can be attributed to PCs and associated peripherals and advocates a seven-point plan to manage their energy usage more effectively. Africa's broadband market is set to quadruple to address 12.7 million users by 2012, according to a study conducted in 33 African markets by investment advisory firm AfricaNext which claims 2009 will be the year that sees this growth start to ramp up. This is borne out by Internet World Stats which has reported that East Africa has seen a demand for Internet connectivity increase with users rising by 1,062% from 2000 to 2008.
