UAE top spot for Singapore IT exports

The UAE has topped the list of Middle East export destinations for Singaporean IT and telecoms companies, accounting for 71% of exports last year, according to the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). “The Middle East is one of the fastest growing ICT markets in the world,” said Shaik Umar, centre director for the IDA’s regional office in Qatar. “Over the past few years, infocomm companies in Singapore have successfully exported solutions and services to the region and worked on several major projects.” However, it’s not just Singaporean companies that are finding a market in the region. Power down PCs for a green pot of gold

Companies are haemorrhaging cash by failing to shut down PCs at night and over weekends, and millions of dollars are at stake, according to recent research by Forrester. Powering down PCs at these times can save a company between US$25 and US$75 per PC over the course of a year. Washington Mutual, General Electric and Dell, which have all done this, claim savings of US$3m, US$2.5m and US$1.8m respectively. However, it’s not just a case of switching off to save cash. Half the enterprises in the UAE think their decision making processes are hindered by having too much data, according to a KPMG Business Intelligence Survey among companies that had already deployed Business Intelligence solutions or plan to do so within three years. Just 10% of respondents feel they are getting the most from their data, but the survey highlighted that one third of companies have already deployed BI and reckon they’re already deriving benefits and better able to see the wood from the trees in the forests of data that they hold.
