Network access control evolved
published on
2009/11/30
by
Anthony Plewes
Infonetics Research published a whitepaper discussing the evolution of network access control (NAC) solutions, stating that this technology is now capable of protecting networks from internal attacks and unmanaged devices -- with many enterprises missing out because "they're thinking of 2003 NAC instead of 2009 NAC". The original intention of NAC was to prevent the spread of malware by preventing infected computers from accessing the network. Unfortunately, the complexity of deployments was deemed more painful than the problem they solved, and may companies found it difficult to justify the investment. In contrast, the latest generation of products are easier to......

Top 5 next generation apps for IPv6

Stewart Baines
IPv6 has been talked about for so long without widespread adoption, you might be forgiven for thinking that it is a solution in search of a problem: but nothing could be further from the truth. Vint Cert, co-creator of TCP/IP and currently chief Internet evangelist at Google, recently reminded us that the IPv4 addresses will run out next year or early in 2011. Its not just computers, servers and mobile devices that are gobbling up all of the existing address space: increasingly devices like the Amazon Kindle, M2M sensors and TV set-top boxes are searching for their own address....

Michel Operto
I am convinced of the conceptual and visual value of Gantt charts in Project Management. These charts encourage us to structure the project and that in itself is a key benefit. The structure can hold several levels of details, display the dependencies between tasks, and show their estimated and real durations, highlights the critical path for the project. The Gantt can also allow us to define and visualize key milestones in the schedule, to see at a glance the overall tasks list and to see the progress made (if %completion and target dates updates are done effectively). Personally, I......

UK broadband comparison website Broadband Genie published the results of its latest survey into mobile broadband services, finding that in most cases the "broadband" part of this phrase is quite incorrect. According to its research, two-thirds of users are experiencing speeds of less than 1Mbps, which is less than 15% of the peak speeds claimed by the most optimistic operator. Fewer than 1% of the 3,600 tests saw a speed of more than 3Mbps, compared with 39% which were below 0.5Mbps.The findings are not new; similar surveys are published regularly which highlight the discrepancies between the marketing promises of operators,......

Google to power UAE municipality
published on

Simon Marshall
The UAE oasis city of Al-Ain looks set to benefit from working with Google to improve its level of contact with citizens and the way it manages its internal work flows. The local authority will use Google software to boost its administration by adopting Google Docs as its preferred source of applications. The authority has extended this idea to citizens by planning to offer them all Google Gmail addresses to help them stay in touch with the local authority. If this latter plan goes ahead, Al-Ain will be the world's first municipality to service its population this way. Also on the......
