MEA broadband services market to triple in five years

The PC market in the Middle East has tripled in the last five years, even though fixed broadband network access has been slow to grow, according to Intel, the chip manufacturer. Intel says it sees broadband network penetration growing rapidly to a relatively under-served region over the next few years. Although PC penetration per capita is low compared to other developed markets at about 20%, the number of computers leaving the shelves will boom in relation to the ability of businesses and consumers to link them up over broadband. In further signs of IT market stabilization from the economic downturn, the latest figures from analyst firm IDC show that the MEA server market was worth US$340 million last quarter. MEA has had a double-digit share of the overall EMEA marketplace for the last three successive quarters, showing its growing importance versus Eastern and Western Europe which have seemingly been slower to gain ground again after the downturn.The MEA market is now worth 11.7% of the overall pot, growing from single digits a year ago.
